Adoption process

November 13th, 2007

Are you looking to adopt a new pet?

You will need to understand, and agree to our Adoption Process, which is outlined as follows:

  1. The first step is to complete and submit the Adoption Application.
  2. Someone will then contact you.
  3. Meet our adoptable animals. Since we do not have a shelter for people to come by to view our adoptable animals, there are two ways for you to choose a companion animal:
    • Come to one of our scheduled Pet Adoption Days
    • Schedule an independent visit with the Foster Parent.

Before considering adoption from A New Leash on Life, please read the following, and take the requested steps:

  1. Consider what kind of animal is best for your family. Do you lead an active lifestyle, or a quiet one? Do you have children? Do you live in an apartment, a townhouse, or a home with a big yard? We want you and your companion animal to look forward to a long, happy lifetime together. Choosing an animal that fits your lifestyle helps make that happen.
  2. Submit a no-obligation Adoption Application. The Adoption Application specifies the conditions under which you are adopting the animal. Your application will be reviewed by the foster parents and the adoption committee. The form helps to give us background on your household, and prior experience with animals. If you do not hear from us within 10 business days of your submission, you may assume your application was declined. However, please feel free to contact us via e-mail to ensure that your application was received.
  3. Meet our wonderful pets who are looking for good homes. We list all of the animals that are currently up for adoption on our website through Petfinder. There are three ways to meet the available animals for adoption:
    • Review them on our website. The pictures, videos, and biographies will give you a quick introduction to them.
    • Come to one of our Adoption Days to personally meet the animals. You will also have an opportunity to chat with their foster parent. Not all of the animals attend the Pet Adoption days, but if you are interested in meeting a specific pet, we will try our best to have him or her at an Adoption Day event. For specific dates and times of our Pet Adoption Days, and other events, please go to Event Calendar
    • We can make arrangements for you to meet your prospective new pet independently through the foster parent. Please contact us.
  4. A New Leash volunteer calls your vet reference. We want to confirm that your current pets are altered and up to date on vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and other care. We also verify that pets are allowed if you rent your apartment or home.
  5. The adopted pet is brought to your home for a Home Visit. We want to make sure that the home is suitable for the new pet and the new pet is suitable for the home.  We also check to make sure all current pets get along with your new pet.  All of this is done to try to cut down on the number of pets we have returned to ANLOL.  We want to be as certain as we can that your new pet will stay with you for the rest of his or her life.  They have all been through enough up to this point, and we do some up-front work to make sure the rest of their lives will be better!
  6. A New Leash on Life is interested in finding the best homes for our animals. If we receive more than one application for the same dog or cat, we will try to choose the best home for the animal. In addition, we reserve the right to turn down an application if for any reason we find that it is not suitable for the animal. It may seem that we are being overcautious, but these policies are based on hard experience.
  7. Once approved, you will sign a legal Adoption Contract. and pay an adoption fee. The Adoption Fee is a tax-deductible donation that helps to cover the veterinary costs that we pay before you adopt your pet. We will go over the details of what the adoption fee covers with you at the time that you sign the Adoption Contract. However, the adoption fees are used almost exclusively to pay for the vet care that our animals receive.
  8. Before adoption, each dog and cat will have been thoroughly vetted. For dogs, this typically includes Spay or Neuter, Rabies and DA2PPvL vaccines, deworming, heartworm testing, and they are on heartworm prevention. For cats, this typically includes Spay or Neuter, testing for Feline Leukemia and FIV, Rabies and FVRCPC vaccinations, and deworming.
  9. All animals are required to be spayed or neutered. We do this prior to adoption for EVERY pet in our program.  With the thousands of animals a month being destroyed at local shelters, we cannot permit our rescues to contribute to the tragedy of pet overpopulation.
  10. Adopting a companion animal is a family responsibility. All the members of the household should be involved in the adoption, and the application must be signed by all adult family members (21 years or older).

Pet Adoption Days

For specific dates and times of our Pet Adoption Days, and other events,
please go to Petfinder’s Event Calendar

Please note that not all animals will be at Pet Adoptions each week. If you are interested in meeting a particular dog or cat, please let us know, and we will make every effort to bring the animal to our Pet Adoption Day!

Animal Companions at A New Leash on Life

All of our foster animals are kept in loving foster homes, where they have a home setting instead of a cage to live in.

We believe that this makes the pets more adoptable because they get one-on-one attention and some training so that they are better socialized when they find their forever homes.
